Who can help me?

I am Susan Dreyer, your instructor for the American Lung Association’s FREEDOM FROM SMOKING® program in the south-central Wisconsin area.

I first became interested in helping smokers become smoke-free when I heard my husband tell of the loss of his grandparents. They both died of emphysema. His grandfather had been a smoker for many years leading up to his diagnosis of lung disease. His grandmother never smoked, but developed emphysema from being exposed to her husband’s second-hand smoke. Their lives were profoundly affected by this smoke-related illness. Unfortunately, because of their shortened lifespan, I never had a chance to meet them…

It was then that I decided I wanted to do something so that other families might be spared the loss his family endured, one which could have been prevented. I thought even if I had to do it one smoker at a time, I could make a difference in people’s lives. Rather than being disgusted with smokers, I have found a compassion for those who really want to quit, but are struggling to do so. If you come to me with that frame of mind, I truly believe I can help you. By joining this support group, you will not only help yourself, but enable other smokers to quit as well…and you will feel good about yourself!

I became certified by the American Lung Association to teach this course 5 years ago, and have facilitated this program for a local healthcare organization in the past. Now I am providing the same service for Portage, WI, and surrounding communities through Living Well. I am always anxious to help new participants!
